So out of the 135 departments, guess how many departments had issues with their charge nurses?
135.
Every single one of them.
So here are just some of the common issues that the intel that I gathered.
Charge nurses are great at managing flow, but maybe they play favoritism with some of the nurses and they give some of the nurses easier assignments than others.
I've had a manager more than once say, you know, my charge nurse is the queen bully.
Okay, and everyone is afraid of her, but she keeps the unit running smoothly.
Or they'll say, I spend more time counseling my charge nurse than any other person on my team.
I also hear, most of them are pretty good, but I cringe when so-and-so is in charge because I know I'll have someone in my office crying.
Other times I'll notice a hesitation from the leaders.
I'll be like, well, well, and they're kind of going back and forth.
And I'll say, all right, are they a role model for professionalism and respect?
And almost immediately they say no.
Now, that doesn't mean that all of them are like that, but there's always at least one charge nurse out of the group.

And I hear this on and on, favoritism, exclusion, overt criticism, passive aggressiveness, undermining the leader, on and on.
Sometimes the charge nurse is the ringleader.
