And so that person can be very intimidating to you, especially if you're a newer manager and this person's been in the charge role for, you know, 40 years and they're extremely competent.
So they can be very intimidating.
We also know that if you've had a previous experience with that person and it didn't go well, chances are you're going to avoid that conversation again.
As they say, when you stick your hand in a snake's hole and you get bit, you don't stick it back.
So if every tough conversation you've ever had has gone badly,
Yeah, it's hard to get excited about going down that path again.
There's also this element of discomfort.
So there's a psychological reality in all human beings, and you've probably heard me say this a thousand times, that we avoid pain.
And confronting somebody about their behavior, especially if somebody's clinically competent, you know, they perform well as a charge nurse, right?
If it's painful, we tend to avoid it because we want to avoid those uncomfortable emotions.
You know, I do too.
You know, if I know I'm going to have a conversation with somebody and I predict that it might not go well, yeah, I get the little butterflies and knots in my stomach.
And the easiest thing for me to do is say, nope, not going to do it because I don't like to feel that discomfort.
And so it's a valid reason.
And there's another reason that I didn't really think about until I read this from Dave Ramsey.
He said, fear of abusing authority.
You really care about other people and you don't want to harm them or hurt their feelings or come across as like authoritarian, okay?
Like you don't want to abuse your authority because we know when we look at bullying and incivility, there's a steep hierarchy in healthcare, especially in healthcare.
And it's not having a hierarchy that's the problem.
It's when people use their position to squash other people.
