And what I realized is not only forget parents of atypical children, there is no specific category called parent.

In any of the psychological terms.

Now, there's plenty about parenting.

So when I do public speaking and I say, raise your hand if you studied psychology, raise your hand if you studied parents.

And some people raise their hand and they think that I'm talking about parenting.

Well, no, I'm talking about that specific phase of development known as becoming a parent.

What happens to your mind?

What happens to your body?

What happens to your friendships?

What happens to your thinking and feeling and reasoning abilities?

Well, now we know from neuroscience that there are very strong changes in the parent brain.

And I'm working on my second book regarding this whole entire field.

because it was largely unrecognized.

But take that into the atypical world and we've got unexplored territory.

What indeed happens to these parents when they receive a diagnosis and how to understand them has not been explored.

And so I had to write the book and it was called Not What I Expected, Help and Hope for Parents of Atypical Children.

And lo and behold, first the publisher saw that

Parents are only looking for books that are going to help their children.

And to some extent, that's correct.
