It's all about power, right?
It's not about really making contact with reality and cooperating towards sane ends.
But in religion, tribalism just becomes the basic in-group, out-group piece of software you're using.
Like, listen, we're evangelicals together and we're at odds with everyone else who's not supporting our narrow project or whatever it is.
So I do think we have to get out of this business of...
of um being deeply anchored to our teams right and i mean like the sports metaphor the metaphor to being what it's like to be a sports fan is actually use useful to consider because i'm not saying i you know when i say identity politics is toxic i'm not saying that we have to get rid of identity in every sense right or pretend that
It doesn't matter if somebody is Indian or Jewish or whatever.
If it matters to you, if you care about your ethnicity or the country of origin or your religion or even your race, okay, great.
Care about that to whatever degree.
We know what it's like to care too much, right?
Fine, care about the Yankees versus the Red Sox, right?
That's fun, that's adding color to your life.
And it's a diversion, great.
It's part of our culture, great.
But we know what it's like
when sports fandom becomes real fanaticism and becomes deranging.
When a soccer player scores an own goal in the World Cup and comes back to his country and gets murdered by some crazy fan, that's when sports fandom has been taken too far.
And unfortunately, religion is a version of fandom
that is often taken too far.
I mean, the religious sectarianism runs so deep in our world that you can find endless examples of people taking it way too far.
