and you don't have religious figures talking about those things anymore.
Yeah, well, all of these frames of religious discourse are hermetically sealed.
The doors leading out of religious fundamentalism simply don't open from the inside because everything can be rationalized as a further sign of God's mysteriousness or as a test of your faith.
Even Mother Teresa, as we know, after she died,
confessed to her confessor for years that she had essentially lost her faith, right?
And so here we have this religious expert who has lionized the world over as a true exemplar of the fruition of Christianity.
And yet she's saying that she just can't feel God's presence and she's not sure he exists, et cetera, et cetera.
And yet her confessor bends this all back on her
as an example of her sharing in the passion and suffering of Christ, right?
And so, I mean, this is a system in which even when the doubts of the experts can be used as evidence in favor of the doctrine, right, then you know you have a proper echo chamber.
Is that fair?
I don't think so.
I don't think belief works that way.
I don't think you can believe something to be true because you want it to be true or because you think believing it to be true will be so useful in your life.
And we recognize that in every other context, but a religious one.
