A good therapist has to be capable of being wrong.
Right.
Just because you have extensive training, that doesn't mean that you're always going to know what's best for your client.
Sometimes I even tell students, once you think that you know what's best for your client, that's a red flag.
Right.
Because even if you have shared identities, we have no idea.
Right.
What this person is really experiencing.
Right.
Yeah, and you can do it.
You know, we tell our students it could be individual, but it could also be like couple therapy or it could even be family therapy.
Like maybe sometimes our students want to go back and do therapy with their parents to figure out what some of these, you know, issues that they want to work through might be.
But I think, again, also a good therapist is just someone who is willing to be wrong,
Somebody who's really curious and genuinely wants to learn about you and your story versus assuming that they already know what your problem is and what you should be working on.
And a good therapist, I lastly say, also always has a map.
They have direction of where they want to go with what you are bringing in.
A good therapist, a bad therapist, I would say, is someone who's just kind of like listening and validating.
I've had friends tell me like, oh, my therapist just agrees with me and they don't really like say much in session.
And that's also a red flag for me.
I'm like, you know, a good therapist should be able to also disagree.
