So these are muscles like every other muscle in your body.
If you are contracting them throughout the day when you need them, say when you're lifting weights, lifting your kids, putting things into your car, if you're moving throughout the day, these muscles need blood flow.
So making sure you're getting up and taking daily walks, not tensing in these muscles when you're stressed or sitting through stressful Zoom meetings or in traffic.
And when you're
relaxing well to have good bowel movements and empty your bladder well.
Those are the day-to-day things you can do to keep these pelvic floor muscles healthy.
And then you can strengthen them.
Just like if you want bigger biceps, you do more bicep curls, right?
You can do more pelvic floor contractions to strengthen these muscles.
So Kegels are pelvic floor muscle contractions.
It's like as if you are trying to hold in urine or hold in gas.
So they're tightening and lifting of these muscles, but you also have to relax the muscles well.
I think the narrative in the 90s was just do your Kegels and your pelvic floor is going to be healthy.
That is not always true.
You have to contract these muscles and relax them well.
And you also have to use the muscles in different positions.
You can't just do Kegels in the carpool lane.
You have to do them with strength training.
Any traffic lane.
But you've got to use them in standing and squatting and lunging and all of the activities you need throughout the day.
