She did all her work there.
On her 18th birthday, she received an incredible microscope.
And she went and looked around the world in her native Offaly.
She looked at the feathers of birds, tadpoles' jaws, insects' eyes, and she was able to document these with her artistic skill.
And before photographs were invented, this is all that scientists and naturalists had to understand the natural world.
At this stage, a lot of biology was about documentation.
In other words,
There's a big living world out there.
Let's go and categorise it.
And she was absolutely instrumental to that.
She was, of course, connected with the great Leviathan telescope in Burr, the ruins of which are still there in Burr Castle.
And she worked with the then Earl of Ross, William Parsons, to illustrate the whirlpool galaxies that the Leviathan telescope was looking at.
At that time, Ireland had the world's largest telescope.
Hard to believe in Cloudy Offaly, right?
Had a big reflecting telescope.
And she was there working with him on the public relations element of it.
And people may be familiar with this whirlpool symbol because it's currently the logo for the Irish presidency of the Council of the EU.
It is, but we have a long way to go, right?
So a lot of the cultures in science still kind of have the legacy of kind of rich people with more money than they know what to do with going off to kind of spend time thinking about these things.
Science is a lot more diverse.
