These responses can change from minute to minute depending on how the person assesses their chances of survival.
It varies by person and situation, which is why I encourage people to always remember that whenever they ask, well, why didn't they just do this in the moment?

And when we think back to his history, this wouldn't be the first time that he'd taken significant risks and believed that he'd controlled the outcome somehow.
We've already talked about growing up around violence, the use of weapons, and the allegation with the taxi driver and being undeterred from consequences.
Experiences are how we
learn.
It's what shapes expectations.
If Ivan repeatedly takes risks, intimidates others, and avoids any kind of consequence, it would not be surprising for him to start expecting to succeed going forward, regardless of the situation, even as he escalates.
And that's one way overconfidence can develop.
It's not just about ego, it's about reinforcement from past experiences.
This is interesting because just a short time ago we were talking about someone who appeared really confident in his ability to control other people.
