And I was taking call every third night.

And I worked really hard to write this book. And then all of a sudden, I have literally journalists and new patients and all these different things that are coming out of the woodwork and coming at me. And my time was getting completely consumed and dominated. Did you self-publish that book or did you have a publisher? No, I published it through Penguin Random House.

So my publisher is Avery, which is one of the divisions of Penguin Random House. So it was a one book deal. I'm going to write this book. I'm going to continue in my career as a gastroenterologist. But then all of this work, I didn't anticipate that all of this work would come out. And so I was basically getting spread so thin that I got to a place where it's like, OK, here's your choice.

You can only have two out of three things. And the three things are, number one, you continue to be a very well-respected gastroenterologist in your community who cares for a few thousand patients. Number two, you can be an author and you can scale and try to get out and connect with millions of people, right? Using the exact same information concepts. And number three, you have a family.

You have a family. So as you know, I have four kids now. And at that time I had two. And I could see where me not being home at all was starting to affect my kids. So I felt like, okay, I have to choose. And if I don't make a choice, it's my kids that are going to suffer. And that's not acceptable to me. So ultimately it was the decision.
