From the archive today, it's Max Porter, who I spoke to in April 2025 about his groundbreaking novel, Grief is the Thing with Feathers.

We talk about the tricks we play to manage our grief, taking a crow dive on YouTube, and the complicated legacy of poet Ted Hughes.

Max, I can't tell you how much I loved this

I loved everything about it.

I loved the language, I loved the form, I loved the way it looks on the page.

It's written from three perspectives.

Dad, the boys, and the crow.

And I guess it's in like the immediate days and then the subsequent years following the sudden death of the boys' mum and the dad's wife.

And of course, it's a really sad book and I guess a study on grief, but...

I don't know, I just, I also felt like it really made me laugh at times.

And I think considering how experimental it is, it's also a remarkably easy read.

a little second to kind of get into the voice of the crow, I guess.

And I was given this book by a friend of mine, Mustafa, about two years ago.

And I remember reading it and being like, man, this is so heartbreaking.
