Hi everyone, and welcome to a very special conversation.
Today, I'm speaking to Lea Upe on her remarkable memoir, Free.
It's Lea's own coming-of-age story, but it's also a story of a country, Albania, at a point of total transformation.
I know and love Albania, but my modern Albania is a very different place to Lea's.
Free opened my eyes to history in a way that no school lesson ever did.
She takes us into a childhood under an extreme Stalinist regime, and then through the chaos of its collapse in 1990.
What makes this book so extraordinary is that Leia tells it through the eyes of a child and then through an idealistic young woman.
With deadpan humor, she takes aim at communism and the capitalist World Bank and leaves you asking serious questions about what real freedom really means.
It's funny and moving and one of the most original memoirs you'll ever read.
There's this tragic split in your family when unannounced your mother just takes your brother to Italy and she justifies it by saying, you know, I rescued a child.
And then your grandmother Nini goes, yeah, but you know, you left a child, which was you, of course.
