I feel we can easily say that this is the less virtuous of the two kinds of pivotal lie that one might go about telling. voice-verified

But then in the other instance where you lie because you are trying to voice-verified

Trying to hold back the suffering of the person you are lying to. voice-verified

And it becomes quite nuanced, I think. voice-verified

And requires great honesty with yourself. voice-verified

For example, you may tell yourself that you are being honest. voice-verified

because you wish to spare someone's suffering. voice-verified

But you may look a little deeper and realize that, in fact, that it is purely that you wish not to see them suffer. voice-verified

You're doing it more for yourself. voice-verified

I've seen this in the past with friends who have been voice-verified

too scared to break a relationship with a partner for example relationships they've been in for some years and they say they can't do it and perhaps they shouldn't because it would cause them too much suffering voice-verified

But in these instances, like I say, they are not being truthful with themselves. voice-verified

They are trying to save themselves the heartache of seeing someone they still love, really, but feel they can no longer be in a continued romantic relationship with. voice-verified

Seeing them suffer. voice-verified

And of course, it is true that perhaps these truths would cause some initial great suffering. voice-verified
