Okay, I could be high on the butyrol right now, but I'm floored that it's taken me, I mean, I wouldn't have appreciated this book if I had read it in the 90s.
And I doubt if it was written by anybody other than Dennett, like if it was written by a young up-and-coming philosopher, it probably would never have made the scene because people would, they had to take him seriously.
There's something I have been thinking about this very... You guys have heard me talk about self-consciousness and consciousness.
Chris, you haven't been privy to my march through the history of genocide and trying to explain why human beings are so destructive and what I've laid on these guys before.
But there's something fundamentally powerful about this
that Dennett's pushing, which is that the seeming, the feeling as if, the feeling to me, right?
This is essentially a linguistic or a narrative layer that is laid on top of the physical phenomena.
So he's not going to deny that there's actual things happening in the bat, right?
But without the bat being capable of creating a narrative that centralizes those things and attributes them to a single continuous entity using memory and imagination and metaphor and all these sorts of things, then what's happening is just the happening of it.
And I think Dennett literally means, yes, stuff is happening, but there's no what it's like to be a bat because there is no bat.
There is no abstraction persisting through time to which all of this, there just is no bat.
But this makes me nervous.

There's a bat from our perspective, but there's no bat from the bat's perspective.
And I think he means, he feels like literally that means that there is no contiguous seeming connection because there's just no mechanism for that to actually take place.
