It's all just like the biological function, right?
And then you say, okay, well, that is what it is.
And then it really doesn't have any subjective content involved.
until it's woven into a bigger narrative or a bigger story.
So independently, all of these things are just these discriminatory states.
And in anything that can't stitch them together in a story, that's all they remain.
But then in us with language and all that, where we have memory and we have the ability to kind of create this meta narrative, so to speak, of what's actually happening, then we are able to say like, yeah, so what is it like to be me?
That's whatever I tell you it is.
That doesn't mean that I can't, you know, they say, what is it like to be a bat?
Well, the bat's not going to tell me.
I can imagine what it's like to have the bat's sensory apparatus.
I can imagine what it's like to be deprived of my own sight and to have echolocation.
I mean, I can't really, but you know, that's what we do.
With guardrails, you can imagine.
Yeah.
But what I can't do is imagine what it would be like to give myself a narrative as a bat.
Don't you think that Dennett gives a decent response to that at the end of 14, talking about Bentham and the capacity to suffer?
Yes.
You couldn't get there without this.
