Anybody can do it if you have the disposable income.

You have to have the savings somewhere, but if you do, it's a great way to move your savings from what might be growing as a taxable account

into your roth ira via that route in other words you can't just take from your savings and plop in 20 30 000 to the roth because there's contribution limits but if you take it and your employer offers the 401k with the after-tax account

And you put it in there and then distribute it out if they allow the in-service withdrawals.

All of a sudden, when the smoke clears, you've moved your savings into a Roth IRA far beyond the limits allowed for Roth contributions.

It's more common than people think.

I just don't think enough people know about it, so it's good we're talking about it.

It's available in lots of plans.

Fidelity offers it, Vanguard, all the big plan providers, for the most part, offer it.

But the company doesn't have to offer it in their plan.

But if they do, it's something worth looking at it.

But it's not for everybody.

And some companies can't even offer it because they don't meet all the testing requirements.

There's discrimination testing, and probably the easiest way to understand that, the government, when they wrote the rules on that, didn't want the highly compensated employees, say some of the big shots in the plan and the company, executives, let's say, to load up for them, but not for the lower paid employees.

So you pretty much have to take care of everyone.

But it's not really a good definition what the tax law calls highly compensated employees.

If I said that to you, you would think, oh, people making a million or more.
