There's a few factors I think are at play here.
For me, Emma, I think the main thing is the ever-increasing pressure boards are under right now.
You have a climate where there's an increasing demand for shareholder return, and there's a lot of churn in the CEO role, a lot of unexpected departures.
I think we're still seeing a post-COVID burnout phase with a lot of CEOs and a very short 10 years as part of that.
You kind of see a lot of the CEOs are not even lasting three years.
As a result, you have this...
phenomenon of unexpected departures.
And so boards are not necessarily set up with the right succession planning that they would typically have in these situations.
There's certain psychological pitfalls you really need to be thinking of when you're heading into that interim CEO role.
The main one is how to operate with uncertainty, right?
It's a role where you don't know how long you'll be in the role.
It could be three months, six months, 12 months.
And that uncertainty can really affect everything from decision making to building relationships to even thinking about the future as well.
The other element is the isolation.
We talk about the CEO role being the loneliest job in the world.
And I think the interim CEO role multiplies that by 10.
And so thinking about relationships, the political dynamics, building trust, all of those can really play a toll and make it a very difficult time for an interim CEO.
