And don't get me wrong, there are some really hard problems that need to be solved.
But a lot of the work that all of us are doing on a day to day
is not sitting down trying to solve a math theorem.
A lot of the work that we're doing is just really doing the basics right, writing good code, looking at data, improving it, running experiments, looking at plots, trying to see like, hey, trying to shape our intuitions.
And a lot more people could be highly capable researchers.
And I think that's it feels it feels far for people to do.
So I've seen in our own company, we've seen engineers become researchers, because the model factory allowed them to be have a much lower hurdle of running experiments and trying things.
And one of the guys on our team, we started as an engineer building our agents.
is a legit reinforcement learning researcher now making real progress.
And that happened in the span of like six months.
That would have not been what I think most people assumed was possible, you know, a couple of years ago.
This is the first model that we're releasing that is starting to meaningfully contribute to our own work.
It's not a state-of-the-art model yet, Fable and others are very capable models, but Laguna S is really interesting.
I'm going to actually pull up the quote Peng Ming, one of our co-heads of Applied Research, said something last week as the model came out about 10 days ago, much better than, frankly, we had hoped for, expected.
And he said...
I have the feeling that a lot of the gains in Laguna S come not from more intelligence, but more from different behavior.
More verification, less taking things for granted, not declaring victory early and being way more persistent.
And to be honest, those are more predictive than raw intelligence for success in human also to some degree.
And this was, he wrote me this on 5th of July on a Sunday.
And it's kind of been burned in my brain ever since.
