In the fall of 1911, after an investigation into the safety and security of the hospital, new policies were implemented, including an easing of harsh punishment and isolation practices, which meant that Lizzie's extended solitary confinement finally came to an end after five years.
She was in solitary confinement for five years.
That's the thing, though, that you sit there and you think, isn't that more cruel than just ending somebody's life?
She's weak from years of self-abuse at this point.
She no longer posed a threat to really anybody there.
But she wasn't eligible for any special privileges either.
She was allowed to return to living among the regular hospital population.
