a very tense time for them, the anticipation.

It's interesting to note that both uh Elizabeth Makita and her sister Irma came to the sentencing hearing, but they didn't come to the sentencing because they were so stressed about it.

The one thing I would say about about the victim impact statements is it left no one in any doubt about the long dark shadow that a crime like this leaves.
Well, the thing we were interested to hear about with Joseph Facconi is just how sick he is.
We know that he had liver cancer or has liver cancer and is undergoing treatment.
Uh so uh this time around we did learn
uh what his life expectancy is and that's about twelve months.
Um and his lawyer asks that this and some other health issues that he's been having, for instance, falls and things like that in the jail, uh be taken into account in sentencing.
His lawyer acknowledged that there could be no findings of remorse or acceptance of guilt, which would normally yield a discount of some sort.
But he did ask that there might be some leniency recognised perhaps in a shorter non-parole period.
