Right.
It's hard to say when we first get language.
Some people have argued that speech starts as early as about 1.8 million years ago.
There's a Homo erectus skeleton called Tocanoboi who is almost a full skeleton.
And if you look at your ribs...
animals like us that have um very a lot of our language is based on the control of our our breath and so um you'll see that the muscles just like in the face we can make many facial expressions because um
Our muscles are very distinct, right?
So we have all these almost like finger-like muscles around our face that make us able to have expressions.
Whereas animals that have less ability to make expressions, they have...
less distinguished muscles, like just one big one.
And so when you look at the rib cage of animals that can control the breath like ours, their ribs show that there were different muscles attached.
And so that's what Takana Boy shows.
So that might be one of our earliest evidence of
speech like what we would expect humans to have.
Neanderthal hyoid bone.
So the hyoid bone is a really interesting bone.
It's the only bone in the body that does not attach to another bone.
And it does so with this long tendon that attaches to the back of the skull with a little stylus here.
And then the hyoid sits in your throat.
and it holds your tongue.
