Once they were able to do a brain scan, they told us that he had a subarachnoid hemorrhage, like he had had a brain bleed.
I remembered subarachnoid because I used to call it under the spider.
But I remember like two days afterwards when the nurse came in and he asked her for a newspaper and a cup of coffee, and that's how we knew that he was okay.
So he was improving, healing?
Yeah, he was up and about, and it seemed like he might be recovering.
But with time, and especially with retrospect, it's now clear that this is the beginning of a sort of accelerated vascular dementia that ended up being the cause of his death four and a half years later.
Yeah, so he was in a rehab facility for a few weeks, and we were—
Just kind of trying to figure out, like, when would he be okay to come home and what exactly were we dealing with?
And we couldn't tell.
It was right after his injury, so it wasn't clear.
But some things began to emerge.
He began to have what I would describe as psychosis.
bizarre but very interesting delusions.
How so?
Can you give us an example?
Okay, so he told us that his roommate at the care facility was smuggling black caviar into the country.
And somehow he believed that he had been wrapped into this scheme.
He also reported to me that the nurses here are all KGB agents.
And I said, how do you know?
And he said, because they speak perfect English.
