It's a disorder that often occurs in women who have no history of severe mental illness, but who in the weeks after giving birth are seized by paranoia or hallucinations or delusions.
Women with this disorder describe really terrifying thoughts about harming their children, and it is associated with an elevated risk of both infanticide and suicide.
And I should say that this is a disorder that hasn't been systematically studied and isn't well understood.
It's not included in the DSM, which is the manual that psychiatrists use to diagnose and treat mental health disorders, in part because psychiatrists haven't ever been sure exactly how to classify it.
It can look like mania or depression, or it can look like hallucinations and delusions.

And there's growing evidence that postpartum psychosis most often occurs in women with vulnerability to bipolar disorder, which is
one of the diagnoses that Lindsay Clancy received.
So largely, we heard from forensic experts who had interviewed Lindsay Clancy herself.
We heard at length from Dr. Paul Zeisel, a forensic psychologist, and notably from Phil Resnick, who is a psychiatrist and really kind of a giant in the field of forensics.
And those experts relayed what Clancy herself has said, which is that she, on the night of the killings, heard a voice that she could not but follow, that she felt like someone else took over her autonomy and took over her body.
And I think the way she described it as like that she was a puppet and someone else was pulling the strings.
She has said that the voice told her, this is your last chance.
Kill the children so you can kill yourself.
There is some support for this because we also heard from a chaplain who spoke with Lindsay after she was extubated while she was recovering from her injuries.
Lindsay told her that she had heard a voice, a commanding voice, which instructed her to kill the children.
And the
testified that the first thing that Ms.
Clancy said to her on waking up was, She said to me as I held her hand to comfort her,
