So we've been very busy managing this global payments network and obviously linking it to cross-border payments, which is a little more complex because it goes across borders and there's a lot of elements to take into account when payments move across geographies and currencies.
know that tension between the things that we want to do and the things that we've accomplished and how how should people that are listening to this be feeling about the progress that has been made uh especially in that cross-border space yeah so progress is done is made every day um so you're right i think uh human nature is that we're very adaptable um and that's part of uh how we evolve as uh as humans and we tend to adapt uh in a faster manner to things that are better
But I often like to remember and remind everyone how we were making cross-border payments just a few years ago.
And depending on maybe where you are in the world, that could be five years ago, maybe 10 years ago.
But we probably all remember that we had to go to a branch.
We had to line up.
We had to speak to someone.
We had to manually fill a form with a lot of information.
then maybe 30 minutes later we were leaving that branch with a piece of paper that had a reference number but it didn't mean anything for us we didn't know when we were going to be debited how much our pay was going to receive and then when it was going to receive so basically we had no transparency about the time the cost and for that experience which was suboptimal we would probably charge a good amount so
Now payments are done very differently and also cross-border payments are done very differently.
We expect to go into an app to validate our identity with biometrics and click a button literally in seconds and we expect the payment to arrive across border in a different country in a different currency 24-7 close to real time.
And this is happening today.
It's happening in many cases.
And in fact, at Citi, we are also connected to these Eastern payment schemes domestically, but we're linking them also from a cross-border perspective.
But the problem, and I would say the work that is left to do, is that the experiences are a bit fragmented and a bit patchy.
Some corridors are better than others.
And I always say, making a payment from the UK to Singapore
might be very different than making a payment from Brazil to the US, for example.
So every corridor has its challenges and functionality and features.
And as an industry, we need to continue to work to make sure that we selectively solve for all these many kind of interactions and interconnections so that every country with another country is basically something we need to solve in cross-border payments.
