But a McKinsey study showed that companies with better ESG scores actually had a 10% higher cost of capital.
So, sorry, better cost of capital.
And what that actually means is that when they go out there to investors to raise money, so they might be borrowing money from a bank or they might be raising what we call equity capital, it's actually easy for them to do that.
And that means they don't have to pay as much to do that.
So their interest rate may be a bit lower or their discount that they have to give on their equity is lower.
And that actually represents to higher valuations.
So
better pricing for investors.
And that really makes sense because companies that are managing environmental risk, social risk, governance risk, are going to just be looking at all of the risks in their business.
They're not just isolating themselves to financial risks.
They're also looking at some of the ESG risks in their business.
So of course, they're going to have a better risk framework.
And we also know that customers want to purchase from companies that are more environmental or more socially sustainable.
And so therefore they have a greater customer base and their customers are willing to pay more for those products, as I just mentioned.
And they also are typically companies that are looking after their employees.
So they're going to have employees who want to stay within the business, who are engaged to work harder because they're treating their employees well.
For me, as an investment strategy, it completely makes sense that companies that are focused on ESG and sustainability are going to be better performing.
I mean, that's just logical.
And that's kind of what got me interested in the space because, to me, I wanted to work for a company that's doing good things.
So, of course, other people would as well.
