And then really directly with my maternal side, with dealing with substance use and struggling as a gay man, my uncle, who I'm speaking to, as a gay man in the United States.
And he was forced into conversion therapy and really forced into carceral settings that were really challenging and really challenged the family.
Traumatized him.
And so these were stories that were shared with me when I got older.
Oh.
And he had that varying kind of precarity using substances, kind of housing was insecure.
And so I really was kind of pushed to be able to use kind of these personal experiences and understandings of that at a deeper level to help these students get out and maybe mitigate the loss of life.
As my uncle did end up intentionally choosing to.
to end his life.
So I didn't want that to be the outcome for a lot of students.
Yeah, I think it's really hard.
And I do I hear it all the time coming from a STEM background of we have to be objective and there cannot be any bias.
And I think coming into public health, which is now where I'm doing my PhD, and having that background, but also now experiencing sociology and criminology and people accepting our personal experience as strengthening the research.
I don't think that you can share and collect.
For lack of a better word, human stories and experiences without being able to feel them and being able to reflect on them in some way.
And if I'm this third objective party, I'm not going to be able to do that.
And so being able to understand what these students were going through at a deeper level, I think allowed me to ask better questions and created deeper research results.
