We need you to pretend that you were like involved in this.
And they're like, okay, I haven't been able to get anyone to like email me back in months.
Sure.
I did not have that experience.
I was very, very, very lucky.
Even if someone's like an executive producer, that does not mean anything.
That's like a courtesy where they're saying like, we value you, you know?

But so the director, Brett Haley, when he signed on, he had done an adaptation before for All the Bright Places, which was a really beloved YA novel.
And so he knew like how passionate readers are.
And he knew like you really need to have them on board if you're going to have a successful adaptation.
Right, good for him.
you don't like spit in the face of the person who made, you get this job basically, like this is happening because of this readership.
And so he called me right away and was like, give me the full list of everything that you think the readers want to see in it and your non-negotiables and all of that.
