Because he came to Hungary, put all his weight and power behind an Orban victory as if America wanted nothing more in the whole world.
than for Orban to win.
And despite trying to put his thumb on the scales and intervene in another country's election in quite an unprecedented way, it came to nothing.
Add to that his weekend trip to Pakistan and 18 hours of talks with the Iranians, which came to nothing.
We've got Donald Trump now going to war with the Pope.
We also have European leaders turning their back on what the Americans are asking for in terms of Iran.
And I really feel that never has the gap been wider between the bombastic rhetoric of Donald Trump and how America has never been so respected in the world.
And people come up to me and say, sir, America is the greatest place on earth again under your leadership.
and the reality, which is that people are thinking, I don't need to take much notice of what America is saying.
And whether it's in Hungary, whether it was in Canada last year or Australia last year or the European Union or NATO, and the list goes on and on, you feel that far from America having gained new respect around the world,
it has gained a sense of fury at the way it is intervening in other people's affairs and the view of the rest of the world saying, I don't want any part of it.
Well, it says something about superpower politics, doesn't it, as well, that the two leaders who both wanted Orban to succeed most were Vladimir Putin and Donald Trump, as if they've both got the same interests in a way that they have.
As you said, Emily, this is a really important moment for
for populist parties across around the world and yet hungary is a small country as you rightly point out less than 10 million people but all bands hungary has been the sort of poster child for what you can do and you know you just look at the recent cpac conference
where Orban is an absolute hero.
And you can see also the limit of American power.
And I wonder whether this is going to see a fundamental shift in the way the Rassemblement National in France or even reform in the UK behave towards Donald Trump.
Because is he now becoming...
Rather than being, to use the obvious trite term, a Trump card, is he absolutely the millstone around your neck that's the last thing you need if you're going to fight an election?
And so populist parties will now start, what, moving away against populism and their leaders.
