Until next time, I'm your host, Emily Silverman.
This is The Nocturnist.
I'm Emily Silverman.
Today's episode features Dr. Julia Enders, a physician, gastroenterologist, and best-selling author of Gut, whose fascination with the body began not in medical school, but as a teenager trying to understand a mysterious skin disease.
That experience led her down a path of studying the gut, writing a best-selling book before she had even graduated from medical school, and eventually caring for patients with complex gastrointestinal illnesses.
But over the years, it was something beyond physiology that captured her attention.
She began noticing the language her patients used to describe themselves.
I'm broken.
I need to function.
My body failed me.
And she wondered what might change if we stopped thinking about the body as a machine to repair and started seeing it as something wiser.
In my conversation with Julia, we talk about her new book, Organ Speak, and how our organs can become unexpected teachers.
Not just about health, but about grief, relationships, immunity, boundaries, sleep, and what it means to live well.
We also explore the power of metaphor and how the stories we tell about our bodies can shape the way we experience illness itself.
Take a listen to Julia reading from her new book, Organ Speak.
I am sitting here with Dr. Julia Enders.
Julia, thank you so much for coming on the show.
Thank you for having me.
