Typically, epics have to do with the story of a people in some way or other.
And typically they take on the questions about the relationship of individuals to a larger community or to a whole community.
And typically they explore something or other about the whole world and a whole story.
But very often they do that in a paradoxical way.
I mean, for instance, even the Iliad,
It's called the Iliad, as in Ilion, Troy.
But this is a weird telling of the whole Trojan War story.
It has this both monumentality of this is the whole story of the Trojan War.
And yet it really focuses on just a squabble between two Greeks.
And it takes place not at the beginning or the end.
And we never get the fall of the city.
We never get the judgment of Paris.
We never get the Trojan horse.
What's up with that?
It's both whole and teeny tiny.
And I think the way that epics are both monumental and also very often the lens is quite small and precise.
And what is the link of nature between Adam and Eve?
That's a small, intimate, domestic thing.
And yet that's part of how did humanity come to fall?
So I think that combination of big and small is part of it.
