is it sets out the legislation for creating the single patient record. voice-verified

Yeah, so this is potentially a massive change for for GP practices. voice-verified

The legislation, as it stands, would require all NHS and social care providers, obviously including GP practices, to share data for the single patient record and then also give the Secretary of State the power to fine those who failed to do so. voice-verified

Um the government put out a number of documents around the same time the bill was published, providing, you know, quite a lot of background information. voice-verified

Those documents say the plan is for all patients to have access to this single patient record, their patient record, via the NHS app from twenty twenty eight and eventually they'll be able to feed into that record themselves, write their own notes into it, I imagine. voice-verified

The government says that all of this is going to give people a greater control over their health and care. voice-verified

And you touched on it earlier, Nick, and the government also sees the single patient record as kind of essential for future voice-verified

health planning for delivering a neighbourhood NHS, also for leveraging the power of new tech and AI in terms of you know increasing productivity, secondary prevention of disease, all sorts of things really. voice-verified

I think it really underpins a lot of what the government wants to do. voice-verified

So the record would include a patient's basically complete medical history, including care plans, prescriptions, results, treatments. voice-verified

And and this is quite crucial because NHS England is being scrapped, the overall responsibility for that patient record, single patient record, and for deciding on data sharing of information in that record, you know, widespread data sharing at that top level, that responsibility will move to the Secretary of State as part of that abolition of NHS England. voice-verified

Although obviously all of that data would be subject to to other separate legislation around data and data protection of GDPR voice-verified

I suppose a common complaint from patients is that they constantly have to repeat their story over and over again each time they attend a new hospital appointment or see a different healthcare professional. voice-verified

And because of this, the government says that support for a single patient record is is pretty widespread in the among the public. voice-verified

And and I think it is. voice-verified

There's no doubt, you know, that some form of data sharing would help improve care, help with things like population health management, research, all sorts of things. voice-verified

But I think, you know, there are some pretty significant caveats to that. voice-verified

I was at a Kings Fund webinar about the bill and one of their experts was talking about this and he was saying, you know, that while patients are supportive about the single patient record, you know, that's very much based on conditions such as transparency over who's accessing their information, you know, accountability for what happens if things go wrong, and having a choice about how their data is shared. voice-verified
