Shannon, how should a first time CEO use this period to prepare themselves to lead?

It's a great point, Shannon, and it's an easy psychological trap to fall into that once you've got the job, you've passed a test, as it were, and life moves on.

But actually you've just been given unusually rich information, particularly as most appointments now involve a psychometric assessment about how others experience your leadership, and including where the board wants to see you stretch.

So it's a really great moment for self-reflection.

on what you should put around you to make sure that you're getting honest feedback and to also have enough support in the role.

Mari Osmond, Shannon's point raises an interesting question.

How easy is it for a newly appointed CEO to develop that level of self-awareness?

You're absolutely right, Mary Osmond.

And particularly in that period leading up to a new CEO role.

There are so many blind spots that somebody has to be aware of, what they don't know, how they come across, how they want to come across in the first period of time.

So it's fantastic to use this time to really gain deeper self-awareness, maybe through talking to a mentor who will share rich advice, or through working with your coach on the kind of style you wish to develop.

And previous CEO experience doesn't mean you've perfected the role.

In every case it's a different company, different context, different board and challenges, and societal norms and expectations of leaders evolve.

And self-awareness isn't only about understanding who you are today, it's also about deciding who you want to become in the role.

Mari Osmond, is it too early to be thinking about your legacy before you even start in the role?

I really like the framing of asking what you want people to say about your leadership in three years' time.
