mayoral primary race, like really a surprising amount, centered around homelessness and what should be done about it.
On that stage, Spencer Pratt's opponents, the current mayor, Karen Bass, and a council member, Nithya Raman, they push back against Pratt's enforcement-now approach to the problem.
And really, the Enforcement Now philosophy that Pratt embodies, it essentially says we need to stop treating homeless people as a special protected class.
He says the Housing First advocates just have the wrong idea about who homeless people really are and what their problems are.
That they're living in a fantasy while many Californians are living in a nightmare.

Well, I think what you're saying is, like, I think some people like Spencer Pratt because there was an emperor has no clothes reality that they were living in where it felt like they couldn't
maybe admit or say the real difficulty and just what it's like to be around people who are, again, like really addicted to drugs.
Those drugs are potentially making them act psychotic and in scary ways.
To admit that and to say that that's actually an issue, I think that was a huge part of his appeal, at least to some people.
And, you know, he didn't advance in the mayor's race, but versions of his argument are pretty alive and well.
I mean, in recent years, I've heard versions of this from Gavin Newsom.

The word offer in shelter offer is really meaningless because if someone can simply say no and stay exactly where they are with no consequences, what's the point of that?
