It's a tactical play, a surprise maneuver coming in, using short term money to buy to buy back longer term debt to get yields come down.
Now yields did come down, thirty year yields were down, maybe the best part of ten basis points.
That's okay.
But the question mark is how long can that last, given the fundamental driver behind the higher yields at the moment, is worrying about the amount of borrowing that the US government is doing.
And we had that figure today making the point that total public debt now is forty.
odd trillion dollars and just a reminder that the US fiscal trajectory continues to head in the wrong direction.
Conventional inflation data that we got for the month of May, I mean, you consider this more kind of specialized number that the Fed likes to look at.
All of the indicators are suggesting there is real price pressure in the system.
It's not all because of the energy story.
It's not all because of oil story.
Does it stabilize?
or does it roll down to the economy?
And then a lot of people will be worried pretty quickly.
