We have migratory birds that start around this time of the year.
You will get migratory birds coming in from the UK and passing through Ireland.
So what we're hoping to do, and what we've seen in previous years, is that very quickly they join up with post-breeding flocks because that's naturally what they do.
I mean, we did have this discussion.
If we take eggs from a bog in South Earth Common,
Why are we not putting the fledglings back on that bog?
And the reason being is that the fledglings wouldn't be on that bog.
You know, the parent birds bring those chicks off the bog very quickly after hatching because they bring them down to the fields surrounding bogs for greater insect abundance.
So we need to put them in places that they're going to meet up with other curlew.
And these two lakes have been identified as areas that are both migratory hotspots and still have birds there.
So like last year, it was beautiful.
Myself and Donald, who's the nest protection manager, were out in Lough Re.
We were watching some of our released birds.
And next thing I heard, alarm calling.
I looked around.
There was a peregrine flying over.
But these birds, these wild birds...
had joined up with our head-started birds and they were all alarm calling, they were all taking a base of action.
So our head-started birds learned that trait very very quickly and we are assuming that they'll learn feeding spots, roosting spots and whatever.
I mean invariably you will lose some but to get them to the stage that they can fly and integrate them with wild populations gives them a fair better chance.
