Committee Chair Republican Tom Cotton of Arkansas says in a statement, quote, During his confirmation hearing last week, Democrats repeatedly pressed Clayton to acknowledge that President Trump lost the 2020 presidential election.
Clayton refused to engage.
Trump's acting intel chief, Bill Pulte, has no intelligence background and has been assailed by Democrats who say he used his role as director of the Federal Housing Finance Agency to weaponize records against the president's opponents.
Clayton can be confirmed in the full Senate without Democratic support.

There's a chance that the combined bill could narrowly pass if Mike Johnson can convince Republicans to stay united on a procedural step required before a final vote.
That's a big if.
And it's already doomed in the Senate where it would need 60 votes to pass, including seven Democrats.
Some Republicans have objections because this version of a stock trading ban allows members to keep stocks they already own, meaning in theory they could still be swayed to vote in their own interest rather than the interests of their constituents.
That's also true of Democratic concerns.
