He basically does the craziest thing you can do.

Maybe we can escape across the East River.
Now, this is right where the Brooklyn Bridge is today.
So if you see the Brooklyn Bridge, that's exactly where this happened.
But he had to do this secretly.
He could not, the British could not know that they're doing this because they would have taken some kind of action.
