Under nineteenth century Admiralty law, anyone who finds a ship abandoned at sea can claim salvage if they prove that the ship they found was truly deserted.
That they'd preserved both the vessel and the cargo, and that they were not the cause of the abandonment.
If those conditions are met, a court awards a percentage of the ship's value to the captain and crew of the ship that salvaged it.
The purpose of the law is to reward mariners for rescuing property at sea.
