So, how can this be?
It seems like someone should be able to come in and undercut them by doing all those things.
And we have many real-life natural experiments, including the predecessor to Costco.
The modern Costco was actually like a spiritual descendant, if you will, of a company created by a guy named Saul Price who founded something called Fedmart.

Is the ultimate natural experiment to prove that this theory is true.
Because he built the company for like 20 or 25 years on this simple formula: fiduciary to the customer, not to shareholders, 14% capped margins, so lowest price, and treating everybody in such a way that he would be seen as trustworthy.
Trustworthiness as an asset is how I uh talk about it in the book.
And eventually.
Eventually, his investors got sick and tired of it.
Because they're like, man, we could make more money if we stopped listening to this guy.
We jacked up prices.
Like, we don't have to pay workers this much.
We're paying all this extra money.
All they could see were the costs of his strategy, his ethos.
They could not see the benefits.
And so they kicked him out of the company.
In 1975, he came to work one day and the locks on his door were changed.
He couldn't even get into the office.
