Because I actually don't think that what I call the architecture of institutional longevity should ever be about the vision or life of one person, no matter how brilliant.
The goal has to be to translate those values into organizational structures that can last beyond the human lifespan.
That's our ambition.
So if you say we should blindly follow a founder, the founders can never be held accountable.
The founders are infallible.
Organizations that are structured around those absolute monarchies do not have the greatest track record.
First of all, sometimes you get the wrong person and you're in trouble.
But even if the person is utterly, totally, completely brilliant, you still have the problem of succession.
What happens when they die?
And I tell a bunch of stories like this in the book.
Stories where the founder's son takes over and is like a total lunatic and utterly ruins the company.
Like this is old as time.

The pressure to abandon the ethos and turn to exploitation is especially dangerous because we're talking with people's lives.
So I'll give you a story.
