What's interesting is the second time I got sober, I told you I had sober eight years. matched

I went back out the second time. matched

It was a very different experience. matched

Because on the outside, everything was good. matched

I had the best job I'd ever had. matched

I'd just gotten promoted. matched

I had a nice house. matched

I had a nice car. matched

I was a decent, I think I was a pretty good dad overall. matched

I mean, lots of things were looking very good. matched

What caused me to get sober was when I looked inside, what I saw was I was as out of control as before. matched

My behaviors were more socially acceptable because I wasn't using heroin, right? matched

I was smoking pot and drinking, which you can largely... Pot wasn't legal then, but it wasn't a big deal. matched

And alcohol is everywhere and free. matched

Not free, but you get my point. matched

Heroin got very expensive very quickly and very dangerous. matched

So they're very different, but inside the mechanism was the same for me, which was that ultimately I was making drinking or getting high the most important thing. matched

I just hadn't yet... matched

burned my life to the ground. matched

But it was coming. matched
