So to that extent, there is a truism. matched

What rock bottom means, though, is different for everybody. matched

So there does need to be some degree of, you know, they say and sometimes jokingly in 12-step programs, there's a step zero, which is this shit has got to stop, right? matched

There's got to be that. matched

I hit what I thought were a lot of bottoms that weren't. matched

And so we need this. matched

And at the same time, I think we need hope to come in at the same time. matched

Because just a bottom or severe consequences, just without anything else, leads to despair. matched

And despair is not a very helpful thing. matched

They're not very helpful for anything, right? matched

And I had moments, I had a lot of moments after I'd gone to treatment the first time that were like that. matched

They were really dark, right? matched

Where I thought, this is just, I'm going to die like this. matched

You know, up till I went into treatment, it sort of sat out there like this magic idea. matched

Like, I'll just pull the ripcord at a certain point, and then I'll go do that. matched

And when I did that and it didn't work, those were dark and scary times, right? matched
