My values and desires are going to be out of whack. matched

I can fix that to a certain degree by what I choose to allow to come into my sphere. matched

Because I am heavily influenceable. matched

And so that's part of trying to get values and desires to sort of align. matched

I mean, I guess back to your point of that. matched

If you give people a list of values, they value all of them just to differing degrees. matched

I think in that sense, you could probably say that all of our desires are emerging from one of those values, and that what you're saying is the contemplation is, which of these do I value more? matched

Because, yeah, if we go back to my very mundane example of sitting on the couch and reading Substack, I mean, I value what I get when I'm on Substack, right? matched

I mean, I'm getting great ideas. matched

I'm getting great writing. matched

I'm stimulated. matched

I value that. matched

It's just that when it goes from being the thing that I value for 20 minutes to the thing that I value for two hours, all of a sudden now there's a problem. matched

So, so many of these things are a matter of degree, right? matched

You know, I've got a whole chapter on the middle way, right? matched

Because that's exactly the point with so much of this is it's not that the thing itself is a problem. matched

It's that how far we take it one direction or the other. matched

Well, I think I've said this, and I'd be curious if you would agree. matched

I have said that if you gathered all the behavior scientists in the world into a room and forced them to agree on one thing, the one thing they might agree on is you don't want to rely on willpower more than you have to. matched
