And so they form these basically like micro and macro gametes.
And then they fertilize each other to form a zygote, the same way that we think of a zygote in humans, except completely different because it's a single-celled parasite.
Yeah.
And then these zygotes become oocysts.
These are what will pop out of our small intestine cells, travel the rest of the way through our guts and be pooped out in an explosive fashion.
Yeah.
And then these balls, these oocysts.
have to live in the environment for at least a week before they grow those banana things inside of them and actually become infectious.
That's why I said old poop.
Wherever.
Wherever they land.
These are incredibly hardy parasites.
So the oocysts, which take a week to become infectious, but during that week and after, once they are what they call sporulated and infectious...
I tried to get a number on exactly how long they can live, and I could not find that in the literature.
Maybe I was not looking at the right terms.
But I can assume, based on the studies that I did read, that it's a long time that they're able to persist in the environment.
They also can withstand freezing to a certain degree.
Freezing is not guaranteed to kill them.
They also withstand most of the disinfection techniques that we use, including chlorination.
Right.
