After the court stayed his execution, attorney Norman Heil, working pro bono, joined Cooper's defense.
Heil fought to get Cooper a new trial.
For years, he petitioned court after court.
But the boxes of legal documents continued to pile up.
Mary Heil still refused to say it was over.
Sadly, the 93-year-old grandmother never got the answer she hoped for.
In 2008, Mary Howell died.
Kevin Cooper had been on death row for 23 years.
One year later, Cooper finally got a break.
