And now, because of Jay, there would be no such limit.
This spring, I drove up to Jay to understand why a town would not only accept a data center in its backyard, but why they'd pursue it at such great expense.
Before I visited Jay, I had a handful of theories about the town's support for this data center project.
The first one was maybe most people in the town didn't actually support it because most people didn't know about it.
I heard data center, and I just kind of went, oh, NJ?
Really?
Secrecy is a tactic being used all over the country to get data centers built.
Developers get town leaders to sign an NDA and only reveal the full scope of the project when it's too late to do anything about it.
When other towns have found out about secret data center plans, there has been serious backlash, but not in Jay.
In Jay, there was some skepticism.
There were a lot of questions, some heated exchanges in the town Facebook group.
It's called the Jayborhood.
But very few people researched the project and tried to stop it.
One guy started a petition, then gave it up after a 30-minute conversation with the developer.
So yes, the project had moved forward in secret, but most people in Jay didn't seem to care.
