When Cody Jakes was a kid growing up in Jay, he loved to stare at the paper mill.
Out of all the people I spoke with in Jay, it was Cody's strange story, the way he's navigated working in two economic eras that look nothing alike, that finally made everything click.
Cody is 32 years old.
He was born and raised in Jay.
And in April 2020, when everything changed in his town, he's working at the paper mill.
How did you end up going to work at the Androscoggin Mill?
By all accounts, holding down this type of manufacturing job in 2020, in America of all places, was kind of a miracle.
Cody had a 401k, paid time off, and the opportunity to rise up the ranks.
That April, Cody had the week off, but he spent the last four days at the mill anyway, studying for a promotion.
The same year that OpenAI released GPT-3, Cody was at the mill, with a clipboard and a booklet, studying.
On the morning of April 15th, he got a call.
So he stayed home.
A bit later, his phone buzzed.
