In a private party in a Russian town, Katya was about to blow out the candles on her 30th birthday cake when masked men burst into the nightclub that she had hired and began physically and verbally attacking her friends.
As is sometimes the case in these raids, members of the town's police also joined them, shutting down the party and interrogating the guests.
Amalia Zateri of BBC Russian has been looking into this vigilante group and she joins me now.
