We all felt like heroes, and nobody had made us that way but ourselves.
Just like that, we were free.
We soon found out that freedom could make folks proud, but it didn't make them rich.
Were the colored people there afraid?
They were not so afraid at the start.
At the election, they were not afraid.
They went up and voted, every one of them, and some swam the river in order to, and some waited.
But after the coup clucking started, and they whipped some and killed some, and got their guns, they were scared.
In many cases, it was horrific, terrible.
They came to take me or kill me, I reckon.
