Context is key to any murder case, but this is particularly true with Mam Trasna.

So Margaret and I began our conversation by talking about where Mam Trasna is and what it was like back in the eighteen eighties.

In the eighteen eighties, it was an increasingly sparse or rural community, might be a better way of putting it.

Can you just describe a community that lived in what was certainly seemed to outsiders at quite a remote place?

And then if we kind of broaden the lens a bit, obviously you were going to talk about a very violent incident.

But contrary to maybe what you might see in English newspapers of the time, Ireland was, generally speaking, in the later nineteenth century, a peaceful place, becoming more and more peaceful.

Like, you know, if we look at crime statistics, things like that, certainly compared to the eighteen thirties and eighteen forties.

However, the Mabtrasna murders does take place in the immediate aftermath of major social upheaval, I suppose best known as the land war, that had seen outbreaks of you know frequent riots.
